About the panelists…
Sylvia Schmelkes is a Mexican sociologist, researcher, professor, writer, and public servant. She is known for her work in intercultural education and for her book, Towards a Better Quality of Our Schools. Schmelkes’s work has been published in five languages by institutions such as the Mexican Ministry of Public Education, UNESCO, and the Organisation of American States. She was president of the National Institute for Educational Evaluation (INEE) from 2013 to 2017. Schmelkes is a member of the Governing Board of the OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (1997- present), and a member of the International Academy of Education. In 2008, she received the Comenius Medal from UNESCO for her career as a researcher. She has also received recognition as a member of the list of the Best Educators of America, awarded by the OAS, 1995, and for the second time in 1996.
Dina Buchbinder is a visionary social entrepreneur, Buchbinder launched Education for Sharing in Mexico in 2007. Since then, she and the organization have helped 1.8 million children, educators, and parents—plus five million more through online platforms—across 13 countries become “global citizens” and agents for social and environmental change. Buchbinder is an Ashoka Fellow, EHF Fellow, and was recognized as a 2018 Emerging Global Leader by the Harvard Kennedy School. She is also a Mission 4.7 Champion and a TEDx speaker, committed to advancing education for sustainable development. Finally, Buchbinder is a recipient of the 2024 Wayfinder Award presented by Kia.
Rosa Wolpert worked for 10 years in the Ministry of Education in Mexico in planning and public policy making. Since 2012, she has worked for the United Nations, first in UNICEF and since 2015 as National Education Officer in UNESCO Mexico. In UNESCO she is responsible for the education program involving partnerships with the Federal and State education ministries, private sector and NGO’s implementing programs and policies to promote achievement of global education goals. Wolpert is Vice President and Executive Director of PROFMEX Consortium of Research on Mexico, and Vice President of the Kipus Network of Teacher Training. She has been recognized with several awards, including from the Mexican Association for International Education A,C.
Ane Kirkegaard is an Independent researcher and consultant from Norway, her academic background in peace and development research, social anthropology, and postcolonial analysis has consistently been anchored in problem-oriented, interdisciplinary inquiry, drawing on peace and development research, anthropology, governance studies, and critical security scholarship, her work focuses on linking local experiences of insecurity with global political and economic structures and change, while examining ethics, memory, identity, and institutional practice. She was Senior Lecturer at Malmö University (2004-2024), in the Department of Global Political Studies (GPS). Her main areas of teaching is Peace and Conflict Studies, but she have also taught and supervised IR, Global Politics, International Migration Studies and Human Rights. Her research is focused on peace theories, with a focus on decolonisation of the subject of peace and conflict studies.
About the moderator…
Hilda Patiño Domínguez is the Former Director of the Department of Education at Universidad Iberoamericana (2017-2025). She holds a PhD in Education from Universidad Iberoamericana and a Master of Science in Education from Syracuse University in New York. Her research focuses on humanistic education and social- emotional learning. She has provided educational consulting services to the Mexican Ministry of Public Education and internationally, including to the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador and the Alberto Hurtado University in Chile.
